Mulberry Paper (Hanji), Bees Wax, Jewelry Wire, Baltic Birch
With the monochromatic effect of this artwork, the texture of the mulberry paper becomes even more evident. The position of it against the wax surface complements both. The addition of painted accents and shiny jewelry wire adds the visual effect to keep the eye roving from one area to the other with the interest always focused on the hills and valleys created with the mulberry paper. Even though the artwork and papers may look delicate, the papers are very strong and durable due to the strength of the fibrous mulberry plant.
Joomchi is a 500-year-old Korean paper-making technique that uses water to fuse several layers of handmade mulberry papers (Hanji) together. PJ Bergin is bringing her unique artistic sensibility to this ancient medium.
