Reach for the heavens, then take a swim
Readers familiar with my earlier posts know that using titles for artwork doesn’t always interest me. I prefer the viewer to look at the abstract work and come up with their own interpretations.
Recently, though, I’ve started naming my artwork and it’s become a fun experience for me. Collectors and visitors to my website and Studio 126 seem to enjoy the titles, too. It gives them a starting place for their own journey of interpretation into the shapes and colors of the Joomchi artwork.
“Neptune – In The Deep” is a case in point. This hanji artwork is a part of the Planets Series. During my research before beginning the collage, I discovered Neptune is the Roman god of the sea. Rather going further into the heavens, I visualized the deep waters of our oceans and seas.
Typically I rip the Hanji for the visual appeal of uneven edges. This time, I cut the mulberry paper into the shapes of seaweed, grass and kelp found among the dark waters. I began to think what it would be like to swim among this beautiful flora. The artwork is darker in the lower section, then gets lighter closer to the “surface.”
This is how the title and inspiration of “Neptune – In The Deep” came about. Please send me a message with your interpretation of this Joomchi artwork.
