Keeping my brain fresh … and having fun
“Serendipity No. 2” – $290
For the past few years I’ve kept August as my “do something different” month. Last year I spent a week with a Master Asian Calligrapher. This year I decided to make several small (12″ x 12″) artworks in anticipation of the Salida Studio Tour coming up next month. I’ve challenged myself to complete six of these pieces in August. I’ve finished three so far.
Since most of my time in the studio is spent creating large artwork made with Hanji (mulberry paper), it’s good experience — and challenging! — to work in small scale, too. Just as a sculptor makes a maquette to explore technique and design for future commissions, I do the same with the smaller artwork. I begin each piece with no conceived plan, putting together different shapes and colors, analyzing as I go — hence the name of the series, “Serendipity.”
Working quickly and in succession helps to keep the ideas flowing. I barely finish one artwork when ideas are ready for starting the next. Please enjoy these new pieces. They incorporate most of what you will find in the larger creations from Studio 126: Asian calligraphy, manga and hand-rolled Hanji twine. All are finished with a thin layer of encaustic glaze that gives transparency and vibrancy to the artwork. I then apply clear acrylic to seal and protect the surface.
Please get in touch with me to tell me your thoughts on these pieces. Your ideas are of great value to me.
Thank you,
PJ
