If you follow me on Instagram, you may remember the images I posted of a two-day workshop in Santa Fe. There I learned new techniques for fusing papers, as well as the nuances of encaustics.

During my stay I made time to visit some of the galleries along Canyon Road. As you can imagine, I saw a lot of beautiful artwork. It was inspiring—and a little overwhelming. I came away with many thoughts and ideas, but there was one that  stood out: the artwork I create is truly unique.

Not only is the combination of mediums I work with (mulberry paper, Asian calligraphy, and wax) unusual, the three-dimensionality in the results is something I saw only in sculptures. All wall-mounted artwork in the galleries was flat.

When I create my art, I consider not just how the colors of the paper play together, but also the negative spaces formed between. Each step—whether layering new pieces of Hanji or adding Asian calligraphy graphics—leads me somewhere new and unexpected. Before applying the last layer of thin wax, I wet the fused papers one more time and literally roll them into a ball, adding texture and shaping the folds and valleys you see above.

This process makes the art of Studio 126 unique, eye-catching and engaging. It stands off the wall and attracts attention by catching the light and casting interesting shadows.
