Altered Lives .. 2020 Montage
There are many reasons the sonobe cube is such a compelling art challenge for me. One, of course, is working with the unusual colors. There are the brilliant colors of Japanese origami paper and unpredictable hues from the “Sunday NY Times”. The other is the discovery that even newsprint has a certain texture pleasing to my fingers as I crease and fold each paper square that eventually becomes a sonobe cube. Thirdly, the methodical rhythm of folding each piece of paper becomes almost hypnotic while creating each colorful cube. Watching them come into form after following the strict origami folding pattern has become addictive for me!
The pages of the “Sunday NY Times” were collected on a whim when the “stay at home” orders were put in place by the CO Governor in March. While reading the paper, it became evident our lives were changing daily without much notice on our part. Every day was a new experience.
Using the newspaper seemed to be a good way to document these changes. The sonobe cubes can be considered as time capsules with bits of information to be savored and remembered. The whimsical hangings include beads and ornaments made from wool and Hanji. The solid color cubes are hand folded and woven from Japanese origami paper. The installation becomes a way to have a more enjoyable look at how we have experienced 2020 together.
