Mulberry Paper (Hanji), Bees Wax, Baltic Birch
In Series 2017-8 the overlay of stitching, calligraphy graphics and multiple colors of the Hanji paper give this artwork it’s 3-dimensional and textural qualities. The results have many interpretations. Two layers of stitched and patterned hanji make up this piece. A “trick of the eye” occurs with more layers at play due to the shadows created from the cuts and shapes in the artwork. Even though the artwork and papers may look delicate, the papers are very strong and durable due to the strength of the fibrous mulberry plant.
Joomchi is a 500-year-old Korean paper-making technique that uses water to fuse several layers of handmade mulberry papers (Hanji) together. PJ Bergin is bringing her unique artistic sensibility to this ancient medium.
