Mulberry Paper (Hanji), Bees Wax, Baltic Birch
The bright colors of Series 2017-7 are highlighted with the overlay of two layers of stitched and painted hanji. A “trick of the eye” occurs with more layers at play due to the shadows created from the cuts and shapes in the artwork. Calligraphy graphics add even more visual interest and intrigue. Even though the artwork and papers may look delicate, the papers are very strong and durable due to the strength of the fibrous mulberry plant.
Joomchi is a 500-year-old Korean paper-making technique that uses water to fuse several layers of handmade mulberry papers (Hanji) together. PJ Bergin is bringing her unique artistic sensibility to this ancient medium.
