Mulberry Paper (Hanji), Bees Wax, Baltic Birch
There is vibrancy and sparkle with Series 2016-23 where strips of two or three layers of the Hanji were fused together while making a random lattice pattern. A Layer of lighter weight paper was added for texture and visual interest. The cord is hand rolled Hanji, incorporated into the artwork while the fusing with water was taking place. Even though the artwork and papers may look delicate, the papers are very strong and durable due to the strength of the fibrous mulberry plant.
Joomchi is a 500-year-old Korean paper-making technique that uses water to fuse several layers of handmade mulberry papers (Hanji) together. PJ Bergin is bringing her unique artistic sensibility to this ancient medium.
