Mulberry Paper (Hanji), Bees Wax, Baltic Birch
Series 2016-9 shows the versatility of this medium with the various techniques that can be used in layering the Hanji. Several single layers are placed strategically and woven strips are added to create an almost tapestry-like effect. The cord is hand rolled Hanji, incorporated into the artwork while the fusing with water is taking place. Even though the artwork and papers may look delicate, the papers are very strong and durable due to the strength of the fibrous mulberry plant.
Joomchi is a 500-year-old Korean paper-making technique that uses water to fuse several layers of handmade mulberry papers (Hanji) together. PJ Bergin is bringing her unique artistic sensibility to this ancient medium.
